PESHAWAR: At least 256 suspects were detained by police during search operations in different parts of Peshawar on Tuesday, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives today, SP City Circle Ismail Kharak said an operation was carried out in Yaktoot a day after a powerful bomb went off in Khalid Waleed Town in the limits of Yakatoot police station in Peshawar, killing a child and injuring six others.

Operations were also carried out in Dir Colony, Hazar Khawani, Jabba Suhail among other areas.

The SP told media representatives that six rifles, two guns, 15 pistols and 330 cartridges were recovered from the suspects during the raids.

Kharak moreover said operations were ongoing in Peshawar since a long time, adding that hotels and checkposts were being regulated on a regular basis.

He said police were conducting operations in various parts of the city, adding that they were facilitated in their mission to apprehend criminals by intelligence reports as well as civilians.

Separately, a group of unidentified militants attacked a police check post in Peshawar's Lakki Marwat district, killing a police constable, police said on Tuesday.

The assailants, equipped with automatic weapons, ambushed policemen deployed at the Suripull checkpost, killing constable Sher Nawaz Khan.

The attackers escaped from the scene by taking advantage of the darkness.

Police rushed to the site of incident and a search operation went underway.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, lies on the edge of Pakistan's tribal areas which have been labelled by Washington as the main sanctuary for Al Qaeda and Taliban militants in the country.

The city has seen frequent attacks by militants in the past few years, with targets ranging from civilians to policemen and other law enforcement personnel.
