KASUR, Sept 22: A widow attempted to commit suicide along with her four children on Sunday at BS Link canal in the limits of Changa Manga Police Station.

Local people saved the woman, while two of her children, including a girl, drowned. The remaining two children ran from the scene when they saw their mother throwing their siblings in the canal. Police arrested the woman and recovered a body.

Rani Bibi of Rukanpura village (Chak 22, Pattoki tehsil) went to BS Link canal near Jamber Kalan village on Sunday along with her children -- Haider, 3, Sadia, 8, Asad, 12, and Uzma, 10. She threw Haider and Uzma into the canal, while Sadia and Asad ran away. She then jumped into the canal herself.

Passers-by saved the mother and later fished out the body of Haider from the canal. On receiving information, Changa Manga police team headed by SHO Tariq Khan reached the spot and arrested the mother. Efforts by Rescue 1122 and locals were underway until the filing of this report for the recovery of the other body.

According to police, Rani Bibi was a widow and poverty had forced her to take such an extreme step.

They also said the children that escaped were safe with their relatives.
