KARACHI, Aug 13: Nasser Jaffer who heads the organising committee of Modern Club Founder Members Tennis Championship, on Tuesday assured to upgrade the status of the event to national level next year.

“The family is committed to the noble cause to help promote healthy activities among the rank of youth,” Nasser told participants in his brief speech before formally inaugurating the event by playing a shot.

He recalled that the club was set-up by his illustrious father Sulaiman Jaffer way back in 1967 with the sole objective to provide basic sporting facilities to young generation.

Nasser paid rich compliments to former Olympian Abdul Waheed Khan for playing a positive role and keeping the club away from politics besides putting an embargo on renting the premises for marriages.

Speaking on the occasion, Waheed said he and his team have made an effort to pay tributes to founder members of the club who were all eminent people.

Tournament secretary Zafar Hasan Khan and referee Khalid Rehmani also spoke on the occasion.

Meanwhile, the day’s schedule of matches was interrupted due to rain from 10am to 3.30pm.

Results: Men’s singles: First round: Ibrahim Iltifat bt Shiraz Khan 6-4, 6-1; Murad Khan bt Abdul Rauf Dani 6-1, 6-7(6), 10-8.
