HYDERABAD, May 23: The Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA), at a meeting held here on Thursday, profusely thanked the Sindh chief minister and chief secretary for granting approval for the promotion of 295 lecturers and expressed hope that the covering notification regarding it would be issued before May 31.

Prof Liaquat Aziz presided over the meeting.

The meeting adopted several resolutions demanding promotions under the four-tier formula from September 1, 1999, issuance of promotion orders for librarians and director, physical education, as approved by the finance department, appointment of lecturers through the Sindh Public Service Commission to fill the vacant posts, and suspension of EDOs (education), Sukkur, Hyderabad and Dadu.

It further demanded that the vacant posts of principals of various colleges should be filled without delay and computers, books, furniture, scientific equipment, water coolers, audio, video system and fax and photostat machines should be provided to the colleges.

It also demanded that the remunerations for the examination of Sukkur, Larkana and Hyderabad boards should be increased and the deputation and contract orders of the educational officers should be cancelled.

BUREAUCRACY CRITICIZED: The regional chapter of the SPLA, at a meeting held here on Friday, requested its senior members not to issue any statement with regards to verbal promises by the authorities as these could create misunderstanding among the college teachers.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prof Sher Khan Seelro.

It stressed that the SPLA would achieve its genuine rights through struggle and it would not compromise on principles.

Criticizing the attitude of the bureaucracy, the meeting pointed out that the DPC of 377 college teachers for promotion to grade-18 was held on May 21, but promotion orders of only 80 teachers had been issued.

It demanded that the promotion orders to grade-18 of 467 college teachers should be issued under the four-tier formula.

It further demanded that all the retired employees who were working on contract basis in Hyderabad region should be sent packing.

It resolved to observe black day throughout the region on May 31 in protest against the indifferent attitude of the bureaucracy.

It further resolved to launch a protest movement after May 31 if the problems of the teachers had not been resolved by then.
