HYDERABAD, May 20: The Sindh University, Jamshoro, on the recommendations of the syndicate here on Tuesday de-affiliated two institutes, namely the Mehran Institute of Technology (MIT), Karachi and Hyderabad, on account of non-compliance of legal requirements of affiliation.

A notification issued by the Sindh University authorities for institutes said that the University of Sindh has de-affiliated the two institutes with effect from May 20, 2003 on account of non-compliance of legal requirements of the affiliation of the Sindh University Act 1972, and added that anyone dealing with the MIT Karachi and Hyderabad in any manner whatsoever would be doing so at his own risk.

ACTIVISTS: JSSF activists of the Sindh University held a protest demonstration outside the Hyderabad Press Club to protest against the transport officer, Agha Riaz, and the director, admissions, Saleh Rajar, and deployment of security forces at the campus.

Addressing the activists, JSSF leaders, Sharaf Rajar and Asif Junejo, warned that if the shortage of transport was not eliminated and other problems of the students were not resolved, the scope of protest would be enlarged.

When asked why they were protesting now when the university examinations had just started, the JSSF leaders said that they had submitted a charter of demands to the university authorities 20 days back but their problems had not been resolved. They also demanded the removal of security forces from the campus.

However, a spokesman of the university told Dawn on the telephone that there was no shortage of transport, and added that a transport committee had been constituted, which was headed by a dean and comprised of senior professors of various faculties, to look after the transport problem if any.

He wondered why only JSSF students were complaining about the transport shortage.
