KARACHI, April 19: Institute of Business Administration (IBA) and Institute of Business Management (IoBM) stormed into the final of the 12th AKU Inter-university boys’ basketball tournament upsetting the fancied teams in the semi-finals at the AKU gymnasium on Thursday evening.

Prolific scorer Syed Mubbashir guided IBA to a nail-biting 39-36 victory over Defending champions Greenwich University. The winners trailed 19-24 at half time.

Mubbashir played pivotal role in his team’s triumph scoring 22 points and was supported by Asim Gul and Faraz Ali who scored eight and five respectively.

Ahad Javeri and Raja Jehanzeb scored 17 and 10 respectively for losers. Former champions IoBM created quite a stir by getting the better of hosts and ex-champions Aga Khan University 46-38 after leading 23-22 at half time.

Saad Shamsi and Sunyyan Junaid shared 26 points amongst themselves followed by Ali Raza 12. Syed Muzammiluddin was main scorer for losers with 14 points.

Earlier, Greenwich University, Institute of Business Administration, Aga Khan University and Institute of Business Management have stormed into last four.

On the last day of the group matches, IBA struggled to beat Indus Valley School of Arts and Architect 37-35 after leading 18-17 at half time. Asim Gul and Syed Mubbashir contributed 12 points apiece for winners while Faisal Javed scored seven. Zeeshan Ali’s 23 points could not help his team to win the battle.

In the other matches, GU beat NUST 61-33 while BU defeated SZABIST 54-28.

Meanwhile, defending champions Aga Khan University (AKU) and Dow University of Health Science (DUHS) set a final showdown conjuring up second successive victories over their rivals in the fifth AKU Inter-university girls’ basketball tournament.

Rida Shahid steered AKU to convincing 27-0 victory over National University of Science and Technology (NUST). Rida top scored with nine points while Zainab Afzal and Ayesha Anwar contributed four points apiece.

In the second match, DUHS thrashed Bahria University 26-4. Nabiha Chaudhary and Umaimah Jilani scored 12 points apiece for winners while Asma Ahmed scored four for the losers.
