THIS refers to the picture (June 7) showing a public transport van fitted with gas cylinders. These cylinders are virtually bombs on wheels. Any accident or leakage can cause an explosion, costing many lives.

After the recent fire in a Gujrat school van the use of CNG cylinders in public transport must be banned immediately for the sake of safety. These cylinders and kits are of substandard quality. All the vehicles involved in CNG cylinder blasts in recent years belong to the public transport sector. The previous government had approved its gas policy assigning least priority to the use of CNG in transport. The caretaker government had restricted gas stations to filling vehicles up to 1000cc only. But the powerful lobbies of gas stations and transport owners made the government withdraw this order.

The new government is requested to implement the policy of conserving gas for use in power generation and industry, and ban the same in public transport.
