NAUSHAHRO FEROZE, May 28: The executive engineer and three officers of the public health engineering department arrested on Monday by a special team of the Karachi anti-corruption police in a Rs14.192 million scam were remanded by a court here on Tuesday.

They are facing charges of criminal breach of trust and forgery.

The special team consisting of Inspector Saeed Ahmed Rind, Suhail Ahmed Wagon, Qadir Bukhsh Jalbani and Abdul Sami Rahoja arrested executive engineer Mohammad Umar Siyal, sub-engineers Akhtar Hussain Memon and Nazir Ahmed Burirro and assistant engineer Syed Nadeem Pervaiz under the FIRs (No.04/2013 and 05/2013) registered against them and two contractors, Ghulam Rasool Mallah and Nasrullah Panhwar with the permission of the competent authority.

A complaint lodged in this regard stated that funds from the MNA, MPA priority schemes and district ADP 2011-12 were allocated to the executive engineer for the construction and covering of open drain nullah between railway track and the main disposal point along a road leading to Moro.

It alleged that the contracts were awarded without an approval of the competent authority.

An inspection of the sites was undertaken during the investigation assisted by ACE technical officer Ghulam Abbas Mangrio in the presence of Mr Siyal and Mr Pervaiz.

The technical officer’s reports and the investigation reports concluded that a loss of Rs14.192 million was caused to the exchequer in the executed works for which the suspects were held responsible and liable to be punished under the relevant laws.

The anti-corruption team produced all the four officials before Judge Jan Muhammad Langhar of the anti-corruption court, Sukkur at Naushahro Feroze on Tuesday. The judge granted their physical remand with direction to produce them again in the court at Sukkur on June 3.
