LAHORE, May 20: The Senate Standing Committee on Sports has summoned a meeting to sort out the differences between the Ministry of Inter-provincial Coordination and the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA).

The meeting has been called on Wednesday in order to avert the possibility of Pakistan being suspended by the International Olympic Association (IOC).

A detailed briefing on the working of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) along with the reasons for the dispute between the ministry and the POA over the implementation of the National Sports Policy will come under discussion in the meeting.

It is the first time that a crucial intervention has been made to resolve the dispute and listen to the views of the stakeholders. The POA has been pressing for the issue to be solved with the country risking suspension from the IOC.

Although the government has turned a deaf ear to the decisions of its parliamentary standing committee in recent times, this time at least the issue will be at the upper House of the parliament.

The IOC wants to implement its charter in every member country and those failing to do that are suspended by the Lausanne body.

India was the latest country to be suspended after their government enforced the Indian Olympic Association to include two codes in its constitution.

Terming it as the interference of the government in the affairs of the IOC Charter, it had suspended India in December last year.

With India having sent a delegation headed by their sports minister, assuring full cooperation to the IOC in following its charter, the ban is likely to be removed.
