RAWALPINDI, May 3: As many as 13 suction motors have been confiscated and challan registered against 10 people during a drive launched by the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) against illegal water pumps on Friday, an official told Dawn.

The areas where challans were filed against the illegal connection holders included Chandni Chowk area, Commercial Market, Usmanpura and Asghar Mall.

The official said the operation aimed at checking water pilferage to reduce the expected shortfall of 6.80 MGD this summer. He said the illegal suction motors were the main cause of low pressure and water shortage.

He said Wasa would launch a public awareness campaign for economical and hygienic use of water, plugging of leakages, control on pilferage, improving distribution management etc.
