KARACHI Shoaib Malik celebrated his elevation to Pakistan captaincy for the coming two-match Twenty20 International series against England by striking a brilliant century to pilot PIA to a 31-run victory over Wapda on the opening day of the RBS National One-day Cup on Wednesday.

The PIA skipper hammered 102 off only 80 deliveries with the aid of eight fours and three sixes to help the national carrier pile up 318-5 in 50 overs after Wapda captain Adil Nisar chose to field having won the toss in the Group 'D' match at the Bahawalpur Stadium.

Talented wicket-keeper/batsman Sarfraz Ahmed also warmed up for the Twenty20 series in Dubai with an 88-ball 79 (seven fours and one six) while Faisal Iqbal reminded the national selectors of his limited-overs abilities with a 53-ball innings of 58 that included seven boundaries.

Wapda, despite good knocks from Riffatullah Mohmand (77 off 71 balls, nine fours) and Imranullah (76 off 58 balls, five fours and four sixes) made 287 in reply. Malik completed a good day at the office by taking two of the wickets.

In the other match in this pool, ZTBL easily defeated Pakistan Customs by six wickets in Multan.

National Bank and hosts KRL had to share points after their Group 'B' clash in Rawalpindi was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain.

Meanwhile, Quetta Bears pulled off an exciting four-run win after bowling out Peshawar Panthers for 149 in the Group 'A' fixture at the Southend Club Cricket Stadium here in Karachi.

Multan Tigers defeated hosts Hyderabad Hawks by five wickets at the Niaz Stadium thanks to an unbroken 93-run partnership between Kashif Naved (78) and Rizwan Haider (45).

Rawalpindi Rams won a truncated Group 'C' tie against Islamabad Leopards at the Diamond Club Ground after rain reduced the fixture to a 20-over game. The day's other winners were Abbottabad Rhinos and Sialkot Stallions, who beat Faisalabad Wolves and Lahore Lions, respectively.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Lahore Fine unbeaten knocks by former Pakistan captain Younis Khan and Hasan Raza guided Habib Bank to a seven-wicket win over Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) in the Group 'B' match at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Chasing a target of 266, Younis, the Habib Bank skipper, hit a 94-ball 81 with a solitary boundary as he and Hasan (76 off 64 balls, six fours) put on an unfinished partnership of 150. Saleem Elahi also shine with 67 (69 balls, nine boundaries) as the bankers were home in 43.4 overs.

Earlier, Azeem Ghumman, who led Pakistan in the recent ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, hit 66 off 107 balls with six fours) to top score for SSGC.

In another match at the LCCA Ground, paceman Mohammad Irshad snared 4-39 to help Lahore Eagles post a 69-run victory over Karachi Zebras.

Karachi Zebras, who were dismissed for 163 in 37.4 overs with Akbar Rehman making 61, were severely depleted by the loss of their skipper Asim Kamal, who was unable to bat after fracturing the index finger of his right hand while fielding.

Asim, the forgotten Pakistan Test batsman, will miss the rest of the tournament since the injury will take at least three weeks to heal up.
