The reunion mystery
“I hate going to reunions,” Inspector Davis exclaims as he exits the car.
“Don’t worry Davis, things will turn out better,” Detective Alfred Bates consoles his friend. “You were always liked by the students.”
“That’s what I am afraid of!” Davis discloses the reason for hating reunions. “In college I was slim, smart and clever, and now I am a police inspector.”
“Cheer up,” Bates comforts his companion. “Being part of police is not bad. I am proud of being a detective.”
“But…”
“Let’s go in and do our thing,” Bates says as they enter the auditorium.
“What’s that?” asks Davis.
“Find out our bully and make him pay!” the detective says, with a twinkle in his eye.
“Jasper!” Davis remembers and points out to a bespectacled individual. “That’s him.”
“Nope…” Bates replies in negative. “That’s Brendon, the headmaster’s kid.”
“How do you know that?” Davis asks.
“The badge he is wearing says so,” Bates tells his friend. “Jasper was a bully, so he would never do something by the book, like wear a badge!”
“Point taken!” Davis replies. “But only that bald guy is not wearing a badge. He can’t be Jasper!”
“But he is,” Bates says as he moved to the bald person. “Hi Jasper, how are you doing?”
“Look guys,” Jasper blurts back. “I don’t recognise you, so buzz off!”
“Let’s go Alfie…” a still-scared Davis advises the detective.
“Oh you are Alfred Bates, the smart one,” Jasper says as he changes his tone. “And you must be Davis, who used to follow him around. What are you two into now, teaching?”
“Sort of,” Bates says without being scared at all. “We teach bullies like you a lesson.”
“Oh yeah, teach me,” Jasper asks Bates to show off his skills.
“Why should I waste my time with you?” Bates begins. “You live a pathetic life, your wife hates you, your son loathes you and you recently lost your job, due to which you were hesitant whether you should come here or not!”
“What?” Jasper exclaims with shock written all over his face.
“And you only came to pick on Davis and myself, without even realising that we could have become something!” Bates completes his deduction.
“Who are you?” the bully asks in a timid manner. “What are you?”
“My name is Inspector Davis and this is the famous detective Alfred Bates,” Davis answers in a triumphant manner.
“How do you know so much about me?” Jasper asks Bates.
“The clothes you wear show you are in a bad state. Since you used to be well dressed in college, the taste hasn’t left you, but the means to buy the stuff have,” the detective explains.
“How do you know my wife and kid detest me?” the bully asks another question.
“No one ever liked you, Jasper,” Bates tells the bully. “So it’s likely that nobody does still. With you being jobless, they have started ignoring you and that’s why no one helped you choose today’s clothes. Mind you, you are wearing different socks, which prove you are living a pathetic and useless life.”
“What should I do to win back people’s trust and love?” Jasper asks Bates in a subdued tone.
“Go back in time and try not to be a bully,” Bates concludes the conversation with an advice. “May be, you could end up a better individual by doing just that. Now let us move along, we have a reunion to attend!”
