KARACHI, April 14: A laptop and about Rs50,000 cash were stolen from a private office of the Chief Election Commissioner in Karachi’s Clifton area on Sunday.

According to Karachi South DIG Shahid Hayat, the private office of retired Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim houses his law firm. “No documents or data relating to May 11 elections is missing,” the DIG told Dawn.

The burglary has been reported to the Boat Basin police.

In Islamabad, Prime Minister retired Justice Mir Hazar Khan Khoso took notice of the incident and sought a report from the authorities concerned.

He directed the ministry of interior and provincial governments to beef up security and provide adequate protection to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Mushtaq Ahmed, the Protocol Officer of the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, confirmed that the laptop had been stolen, but said that he did not know if there was any sensitive information on it.

He said ECP officials were looking into the matter to prevent recurrence of such incident.

The prime minister also expressed concern over an attack on the office of the ECP in Kalat and asked the Balochistan government to submit a report on the matter.
