KARACHI, Sept 3: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah announced on Monday that the Sindh Medical University — formerly the Sindh Medical College — would be renamed as Jinnah Sindh Medical University.

He made this announcement while presiding over a meeting about the varsity’s issues at the Chief Minister’s House.

He said that a summary for the change in name had already been approved.

Regarding the extension of the university, the chief minister said that the building would be expanded when the need for it arose and assured the participants in the meeting that the Sindh government would resolve the administrative, legal and financial issues of the recently-upgraded university.

Earlier in the meeting, Mr Shah was informed that under Pakistan Medical and Dental Council regulations, it is mandatory to have to have a fully-fledged hospital affiliated with the university.

For now, the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, National Institute of Child Health and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases are affiliated with the university to serve as teaching hospitals.

He stressed the need to ‘meet the challenges of higher education, professional dignity, competition and adoption of latest knowledge’ for producing better medical professionals, according to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s House.

Responding to criticism on the admission policy, the chief minister made it clear that students from all over the province could apply to the university.—APP
