ISLAMABAD, May 21: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday admitted the bail-after-arrest plea of another accused in the Rs6 billion land fraud case on medical ground.

Earlier, two other accused - Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan and former managing director National Police Foundation Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmed - had also been released on medical grounds.

On Monday, Justice Azim Khan Afridi admitted the bail plea of Abdul Hanan, former director National Police Foundation (NPF), against a surety bond of Rs1 million.

Mr Hanan’s counsel told the court that his client was a chronic liver patient and was currently admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims). Saying the hospital had no adequate facilities for the treatment of his client, the counsel requested the court to release him.

The three were arrested in January 2012 following rejection of their bail applications by the special judge central of Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, IHC Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman summoned the secretaries of interior and finance on a petition filed by 48 officers of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) seeking raise in their salaries.

Shoiab Shaheen, the counsel for the petitioners, told the court that the job of FIA officials was not only risky but also time-consuming and complicated. He said despite the hardships, the salaries of FIA officials were still less than that of other law enforcement agencies.

The court earlier had issued notices to the ministries of finance and interior but their absence annoyed the chief justice. They were directed to appear before the court on June 6 and explain their position.

In yet another case, a division bench comprising Justice Noorul Haq N. Qureshi and Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui issued notices to the Ministry of Commerce and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lums) on an intra-court appeal filed by some commerce and trade officers against the selection of commercial attaches from the private sector to be deployed in the Pakistan’s foreign missions in Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada, Unites States and Latin America.

The IHC single bench on April 27 had dismissed the petition of the officers and allowed the ministry to select the commercial attaches from the government and private sectors.
