GUJRANWALA, April 17 Police on Friday booked more than 20 staffers of the Central Jail for blocking Sialkot Road during a demonstration for a raise in their salaries.

Jail staff blocked the road on Thursday, burnt tyres, suspended traffic for an hour and raised slogans against the government for not increasing their salaries.

On the direction of the authorities, Satellite Town police registered a case against deputy superintendent of jail Shahzad Tanvir Butt, assistant superintendent Mudassar, a head constable, six constables and some unidentified staffers.

Separately, Punjab Prisons Minister Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor arrived in the city to attend a meeting at Commissioner`s Office regarding wheat procurement, but left the city without visiting the Central Jail, where staff was demonstrating for a pay raise on a par with Punjab police. The minister did not call any jail official to seek a report on the staff`s protest or prisoners.
