GILGIT/SKARDU, Aug 29: Unidentified gunmen ambushed a car in Amphary Gilgit, leaving a 16-year-old girl and an infant seriously wounded here on Wednesday.

Police said that a cleric Qari Khan Mohammad was going in his car along with his family members when he came under attack. They said that the Qari escaped unhurt, but two of his family members were wounded, who were taken to civil hospital, Kashrote.

When contacted, doctors at the hospital said that condition of both the injured was now stable after minor surgery and treatment.

The police said that they had arrested two suspects following the attack and a case was also registered against them.

Markets remained closed and law-enforcement agencies enhanced patrolling the streets, as tension continued to grip the city on Wednesday. Also, traffic from Gilgit to other districts remained suspended, while almost none of the officials attended government offices.

In Skardu, local media persons on Wednesday took out a protest rally against Skardu police for allegedly beating up journalist Mohammad Ishaque at Skardu Airport the other day.

Members of Skardu Press Club, Baltistan Union of Journalists and Baltistan Electronic Media Reporters Association marched from the press club to Yadgar-i-Shuhada Baltistan and demanded of the authorities to arrest the police officials who had beaten up Mr Ishaque.
