ISLAMABAD, July 11: An alliance of religious parties has said that the contempt of court amendment bill adopted by the National Assembly is contrary to Islamic injunctions and liable to be struck down by the Supreme Court.

At a meeting of the Milli Yekjehti Council (MYC) held here on Wednesday, leaders “termed the changes to the law an attempt to make a few people above the law which was against the principle of equality and ought to be struck down by the Supreme Court”.

The council decided to assume the gigantic task of promoting sectarian harmony. It has set up a committee to prepare sets of speeches for ulema of different schools of thought to reduce differences which cause acrimony among different sects.

The council will hold meetings in all provincial capitals and host national conventions of ulema and mashaikh to promote sectarian harmony.

It decided to set up its provincial chapters and try to reform society on the basis of recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology.

The council decided to observe the 27th of Ramazan as ‘Independence Day’.

A resolution adopted at the meeting condemned the massacre of Muslims in Myanmar and urged the United Nations and the OIC to take notice of human rights violations in that country. The MYC criticised government’s decision to reopen Nato supply routes to Afghanistan and supported the stand taken by the Difa-i-Pakistan Council on the matter.

It expressed strong reservations on the government’s attitude on the issue of ‘missing persons’ in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and supported the Supreme Court’s verdict in this regard.
