LAHORE, Sept 23: Higher Education Commission's social science committee on history, Pakistan studies and social sciences at the university level has decided to standardise the syllabus of history and Pakistan studies by removing all dichotomies and discrepancies in the existing syllabus.

The HEC committee meeting was organised by Punjab Universitys Pakistan Study Centre in collaboration with the history department and was chaired by PU faculty of arts dean Prof Dr S. Qalb-i-Abid here on Friday.

The committee recommended use of new teaching methodologies including frequent use of facilities provided by the HEC such as videoconferencing as well as short-term and long-term faculty hiring schemes.

The committee reviewed research journals published in the discipline of history and Pakistan studies and upgraded the category of research journals published by the PU from Y to X category. The journals published by Peshawar University and National Institute of Pakistan Studies, Islamabad, were recommended to be recognised by the HEC.

The committee reviewed books published by teachers of various universities and decided that one book would be considered equivalent to two research papers in X category of HEC recognised research journals. It decided that titles/topics of M.Phil and PhD theses and research in progress would be given on the websites of each department.

The PhD dissertations and articles published in research journals would be sent for evaluation to eminent experts in academically advanced countries.

It recommended frequent exchange of students among universities, praised the PU for holding international conferences and asked other universities to use the services of PU faculty members in this regard. The committee discussed ways and means to promote the disciplines of history, Pakistan studies and social sciences at the university level.
