KARACHI: He was a comedian par excellence, but his last act left an entire nation in tears. Iconic comedian and actor Moin Akhtar died of a heart attack on Friday.

He was 60. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and three sons.

Born in 1950, Moin Akhtar joined show business in the ’60s as a comedian. His remarkable impersonations and rib-tickling skits earned him recognition in no time. But it was in the ’70s that Moin Akhtar’s appearance on the Zia Mohyeddin Show as a standup act catapulted him to national fame.

This writer still remembers as a child listening to an audiocassette, which sold like hot cakes in the ’70s, in which Moin Akhtar presented a series of impersonations and sound-effects, along with a humorous sketch of a villager who tries to copy an urbanite and in the process behaves like a nincompoop.

The fame was soon followed by critical acclaim when Moin Akhtar joined hands with humourist Anwar Maqsood and did a host of shows with him.

Beginning with an episode of Angan Terha in which Moin Akhtar played the role of a poet looking for a place to live, the duo came up with one gem after another.

The combination resulted in classics like Studio 2½ and Studio Poney Teen in which Moin Akhtar did the part of one of the interviewees and Anwar Maqsood the interviewer.

Akhtar’s zany but meaningful answers to Anwar Maqsood’s ostensibly innocuous questions created a magic the kind of which was never witnessed on Pakistani television. Comedienne Bushra Ansari also became part of their group and they did some memorable shows together.

Moin Akhtar didn’t confine his talent to comedy acts. He proved his versatility by playing the protagonist in a long-play Rozy written by Imran Aslam and directed by Sahira Kazmi.

Moin Akhtar did the part of a man who assumes the garb of a woman in order to find employment. His performance was not only appreciated in Pakistan but even across the border it earned him a great many fans. Rozy was an adaptation of a successful Hollywood film Tootsie.

On his inevitable comparison with Tootsie’s star Dustin Hoffman, Moin Akhtar often claimed that he never saw the film until after he’d done the play.

The late actor’s another outstanding performance was witnessed in a play Half Plate, written by Anwar Maqsood and directed by Mohsin Ali.

He portrayed the personality of a self-obsessed poet who had a past (and a nagging wife) that he seldom liked to remember. The acting was right out of the top drawer and intelligently complemented the script.

Moin Akhtar and Anwar Maqsood’s duo had become so inseparable that even after the advent of satellite TV they were asked by different channels to work together.

Their last show as the writer-actor combo was Loose Talk which ran for many years and Moin Akhtar assumed hundreds of characters in it.

These days a drama serial featuring Moin Akhtar as the main character is on air on a local private channel.

Apart from a worthy body of work on television, Moin Akhtar acted in a few films, including Tum Sa Nahin Dekha and Mr Tabedar. His theatre performances alongside Umar Sharif in stage dramas like Buddha Ghar Pe Hai were also a commercial success.

In recognition of his talent and work the government had bestowed on Moin Akhtar the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Pride of Performance award.

The actor’s namaz-i-janaza will be held on Saturday after Zohr at Masjid-i-Toheed in DHA Phase II, Malir Cantt.

May Allah rest his soul is peace and 'Jannah'. May Allah give his family the courage to bear his loss.I had watched Moin performing on stage while I was in Dow Medical College, he was GREAT. Those days were the begining days in his career but he was great from day 1 till his death. Till now I watched him on TV whenever I got chance and enjoyed his performance. He was a GREAT actor and left a big gap in show biz. I do not think anyone on his level in his field exists on screen till now. He will be remembered forever and will give inspiration to existing and new comers in the field of performance.

I still miss Jamshed and now the loss of a very fine human being, Moin Akhter, has been added to my grief. I had lost personal contact with him for the last so many years but just like millions of Pakistani's and Indians I always ejoyed watching his new and old shows. “Legend born once in a while in history”, he was man of giving a new horizon to humor and comedy in Pakistani media, his in-depth knowledge on subject issues with positive criticism led him to intellectual streamline. He is indispensable for his skills in innovating and branding the humor industry in Pakistan with always new ideas, he was indeed the best actor disguised in many faces that touched the hearts of many and will always be remembered in the hearts of many for many decades… They say, when time comes it comes…but 61 is not a age to die, 61 is not a age to go like that, 61 is not a age to die…No! is not a age to die ….Moin Akhtar you were my inspiration of nostalgia, If I had to go back in time would watch your shows from 80s …now you are gone, we are left with despicable, dreadful era of lacharpan and behodgi on media…I can’t show it to my kids nowadays what I used to watch as kid but thank you for all your work will keep it for our next generation for preserving old values… Allah Hafiz Moin Akhtar..May Allah keep your soul in peace and heaven forever…

Moin Akhtar..what a truly lucky and blessed man he was. What more of a blessing could one ask from Allah swt that when you go, the entire nation plus other fans all over the world grieve for you and pray for you. He was loved by ppl of all ages and will be missed and remembered by all for rest of their lives. He went early but what a truly fulfilling life he lived. His shows, his dramas are part of everyone's memories, the better part, the better memories of Pakistan. No matter how severe and depressing the outside world became, one was sure to watch his dramas, his shows and block out everything else and just laugh and smile. His comedy was such that you never got tired of watching it, and re-watching it again and again, years after years. His drama Rozi is part of those blurry childhood memories...but i still remember clearly, how much everyone at home waited for it, enjoyed it and made sure never to miss any episode. Amazing how, when i think about it, all i could think of is praises for him by everyone...just praises and praises alone. :) MAY ALLAH swt GRANT HIM THE HIGHEST PLACE IN JANNAH...Ameen suma Ameen. It is a hadith that "Smile for your brother is a charity" and if you look at it that way...this man had nothing but given charity all his life.

Pakistan lost yet another pillar in entertainment. A God-gifted asset of Pakistan television, film and stage; left his fans with their eyes flooding with tears. Pakistan lost four main comedians in this month, Babu Baral, Mastana, Liaquat Soldier and now the LEGEND himself. (May Allah bless them all in the life here after. Ameen) This everlasting vacuum will always make us remember him through his characters as Rozie and such other marvelous acts in dramas like SUCH MUCH, EID TRAIN etc. May Allah Pak escalate him to the highest pedestals of Jannah and give his love ones courage to bear the great loss. We love you Moin.... and we always will.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of the Great MR. Moin Akhtar. I am having difficult time holding back my tears. When I was growing up in Hyderabad, Pakistan, I remember listening to his jokes and laughing. His comedy was clean and family oriented. At the same time he was able to capture many other communities with different languages in Pakistan. He was an institute in himself and words cannot justify the sadness of his loss. May Allah bless his soul and give his loved ones the strength to deal with this great loss in their lives. We will not have another Moin Akhtar; the great one has gone to a better life.

An end to the era that was....Moin Akhter.. Am glad that I was born in that era...where I could see the man he was......from the Black and White PTV...to the modern day plethora of channels...his prominence never faded...the way he was able to transform the ordinary life situations into lighter perspective with cutting edge satire...yet giving smiles to many..... He would be remembered by everyone who lived to see his work.... Then man, the writer, the comedian, the compere, the disguises he had.....remind me of nothing....but that time consumes everyone and everything is as perishable...as the passing day and night.... May he rest in peace as he left for the heavenly abode...

although every soul has to depart but there are some people who always remain in the heart of people. Moin Akhtar was a person, whenever he used to come on the screen people automatically started smiling by expecting him that he will make them laugh and which he did always. he was the man who put smiles on many faces and i hope Allah will also make him happy by giving him place in Jannat-ul-firdus. being a human being i think he would also be happy by getting space in Allah's paradise. which is the greatest success. lets pray for him. Salam Alaikum I learnt one of th most important lessons from Moin Akhtar Marhoom. He always use to recite "Vato Izzo mun tasha Vato zillo mantasha" Honor and Dishonor is from Allah. Undoubtedly, the greatest loss of a true legend in Pakistan's media history. I do not believe that there has been, or will be, such a versatile actor of so many talents as the late Moin Akhtar! I believe he was the finest and most accomplished comedian of the sub-continent since creation of India and Pakistan. His greatest accomplishment to me, is that he made millions of sorrow souls smile, laugh and forget their miseries for a short while - and am convinced that just this one accomplishment would be enough for Allah SWT to grant him Jannat-ul-Firdous, Insha-Allah. Lets all pray for the departed soul; and ask Allah to grant Sabr-e-Jameel to his wife and children, Ameen.

No words exists to lament the tragic loss of one of the greatest artist and impressionist in the history of television. An actor never dies; Moin Akhter will live in our hearts and in the recorded media forever as an icon of acting and comedy. So natural, so pure and so articulate in his acting that filling the gap him would be next to impossible. I remember running into him at a shopping mall in Washington, DC about 10yrs ago. He was so down to earth person, I wanted his autograph and he was open to chit chat.. asking me about my family back home. He was a very generous person, he helped a lot of unfortunate people, we need more humans like him in Pakistan and in world. May God bless his soul, and provide comfort to his wife and kids. I still have the autograph.

Inna Lillahi Wa inna Ilayhi Raa'jioon. May Allah (SWT) forgive all of his sins and have mercy upon him, and may He make his grave wide and spacious and give him comfort with the promise of re-uniting with his family in Jannah. May Allah (SWT) grant him entry into the highest level of His Gardens and place him in the honored company of His most dearest servants. May Allah (SWT) make him children to be a source of Sadaqa Jariya for him. May Allah (SWT) make the grief of this passing easy upon his family, his friends and may He grant them all the strength, resolve, and the will to keep going strong. Allahumma Ameen Thumma Ameen

Loss of an intelligent human being. Yes I feel he should be remembered as a satire critic of the society (a mouthpiece of Anwar Maqsood and also through his independent work). Pakistan really lacks now such people. May Allah Bless him with Jannat ul Firdous, Aamin. And Amin to all our Indian brothers/sisters prayers aswell.
