RAWALPINDI: The police have arrested three people for their alleged involvement in raping and robbing a woman in Rawat.

A police spokesperson said on Thursday that a gang of three people involved in robbing a woman of cash and sexually assaulting her at gunpoint have been arrested.

He said the suspects were allegedly involved in highway robberies in which they would chase motorists. Police said they are expecting to obtain important information from interrogating the suspects that will help them find other people who were in the gang with them or were facilitating them.

When contacted, SP Saddar Ziauddin Ahmed told Dawn that the police began investigating the case after it was reported by the victim on Monday. He said the suspects were also allegedly involved in other crimes and would be produced in court for remand after an identification parade in the other cases.

The victim, who lives in the Banni police area, was on her way to a wedding in Chak Beli Khan with a friend at around 8:30pm on Feb 12.

She was in a taxi with her domestic employee when the car was intercepted by another car on Chak Beli Khan Road. Two of the three people travelling in the other car got out of the car and boarded the taxi. They told the taxi driver, Faisal Khan, to take them to a deserted area where they stole her mobile phone and well as Rs80,000 and Rs5,000 from the driver.

She said the two people kept speaking to her friend, the taxi driver and her employee while holding them at gunpoint while a third unidentified person took her elsewhere and raped her.
