LAHORE: The West Pakistan Governor, Mr Mohammad Musa, said here today [June 14] the policy of the present Government was to widen, strengthen and improve existing road networks so as to make it fit to meet the challenge of the ever-rising volume and intensity of traffic.

Speaking at the opening of the new Ravi bridge here this evening, he said, “We could not hope to attain the objectives which underlie our national plans unless priority was given to construction of roads and bridges.” Apart from material development, roads were vital to national and social integration of the areas which they served, the Governor added.

Governor Musa told the distinguished gathering present on the occasion that greater emphasis was now being laid on the construction of more and more modern bridges and super-highways. These highways, he added, would be a dramatic departure from the old conventional roads that the people of the province were accustomed to see. He hoped that these modern bridges and super-highways would adequately cater to the future needs of traffic for some time to come.

Mr Musa was happy to note that the Rs 1.80 crore bridge was the most ambitious bridging project completed so far in the province aside from weirs which also served as road bridges. — Agency
