ISLAMABAD: The Health Co-ordination Committee today [April 22] reviewed the cholera situation in West Pakistan and recommended steps to further tighten up control measures against cholera and smallpox in the country, it was officially stated today.

The Committee started its two-day deliberations here today under the chairmanship of Central Health Secretary W.A. Sheikh. Among others present were the Director-General of Health, Pakistan; the Secretary for Health, West Pakistan; and the Director of Health Services, East Pakistan.

The West Pakistan Health Secretary told the committee that cholera was under control in the province and there was no reason for any panic. He briefly explained the measures to control the disease in Multan area. The Central Government, however, assured the province of all help in their fight against the disease.

The progress of internship scheme for fresh medical graduates and the progress of rural health programme were also discussed at the meeting. Besides, steps to reduce incidence of smallpox in East Wing were considered and it was decided that priority should be given to dry vaccine against smallpox over the wet vaccine. Meanwhile arrangements have been made to inoculate Government employees in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
