Let democracy flourish

Published February 22, 2018

SINCE the general elections of 2008 democracy has been allowed to function in Pakistan. The incumbent government of the PML-N is apparently going to complete its constitutional term of five years.

Previously, the PPP-led coalition government had also completed its tenure. A landmark transition of power took place from one civilian government to another in 2013. This is a healthy sign for democracy that two assemblies will complete their terms on the trot.

Apart from failures, this democratic phase has seen some gigantic achievements as well. Some of the achievements of this phase are 18th Amendment which paved the way for a strong democracy and a consistent parliamentary form of government, the 7th NFC Award which addressed the grievances of smaller provinces, a better law and order situation after the operation Zarb-i-Azab and the National Action Plan, electoral reforms, the inauguration of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor — a game changer for Pakistan — and the return of international cricket in the country.

However, there are some failures such as energy crisis, corruption and nepotism, lack of transparency in infrastructure projects, and lack of political reconciliation which paved the way for sit-ins and agitations. This is the election year and once again opportunity is provided to the people to elect their rulers.

Every process must be given adequate time to flourish and to produce positive results. Democracy is the only viable option through which Pakistan can gain prosperity.

THIS is apropos Ahmed Bilal Mehboob’s article ‘Poll transparency reversed’ (Feb 20). The writer has exposed the intention behind the passing of the Election Act 2017.

Since this act was passed unanimously, it is a comment on all parties’ sincerity towards democracy and to the nation. It has come as a blow to the nation whose confidence in the system has been shattered.
