KOHAT: Police assured the people of providing complete protection to them and their properties as some residents of Ustarzai living astride Orakzai Agency surrendered heavy weapons at a ceremony here on Thursday.

SP investigation Tariq Mehmood told media persons at Ustarzai police station that the ongoing deweaponisation campaign would cover the whole division, including Kohat, Karak and Hangu districts and it might be extended to the adjoining tribal areas for holding on the successes made in the ‘Zarb-i-Azb’.

The elders of the tribe, Peshawar High Court’s former chief justice Syed Ibne Ali, councillor Mahtabul Hassan, assistant commissioner Mohammad Omair and DSP Abdur Rasheed also spoke on the occasion and thanked the people for their cooperation.

The weapons handed over to the police by the people included two mortar guns, two anti-aircraft guns, one rocket launcher, one heavy machinegun, two light machineguns, 60 mortars and 840 cartridges of anti-aircraft gun.

Meanwhile, the Jarma police seized four kilogrammes of hashish during checking at Muslimabad checkpost on the Indus Highway and arrested two carriers on Thursday.

DSP Hussain Ghulam told media persons that they had received information that an attempt would be made to smuggle hashish from Orakzia Agency via Kohat to Bannu.

He said that a police team stopped a car (RIT-6621) and recovered four kilograms of hashish concealed in its switch board. The two alleged carriers arrested from the spot were identified as Mohammad Aleem and Mohammad Jameel of Orakzai Agency. The Jarma police have registered a case against them.

QWP MEETING: Qaumi Watan Party has said that it will get Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s due share in resources after coming into power.

Speaking at a function regarding party reorganisation, provincial secretary information Tariq Khan and member central executive committee Jameel Marghaz asked the people to strengthen QWP.

The function was held at the hujra of Kohat division president Mahmoodul Islam advocate.

They said that Aftab Sherpao was a seasoned politician who could resolve the people’s problems.

HUNTING LICENCES: Divisional wildlife officer Rehmatullah Marwat has said that the department issued 214 hunting licences and earned Rs2.1 million in revenue in 2016.

Giving details, he told this correspondent on Thursday that efforts were being made to legalise the business and hunting of birds.

He said that in 2015 the department earned a total of Rs1.2 million from selling licences. Answering a question, he said that action would be taken against those selling birds illegally in the market.
