Pakistan International Airlines cabin crew with the help of a medical student saved life of a 70-year-old passenger on board flight PK-333 on Sunday, said a press release issued by the airlines.
During a Multan-Karachi flight, the passenger "fell unconscious and stopped breathing," it read.
After realising the situation, PIA crew with assistance from a final year medical student, gave Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) also called artificial breathing to the affected passenger.
The crew managed to restore respiration of the patient after an effort of 15 minutes.
"Immediately upon arrival at Karachi, an ambulance and a doctor had been arranged and the passenger was handed over to them," read the press release.

The effort is commendable, how ever this is very crude statement.
I am sure facilities are limited on board, I believe crew members along with young docotor would not have gone beyond BLS, interetsed to know did patient suffer from cardiopulmonary arrest? CPR carried on for about 15 mint? Is patient still alive and what is his brain condition? Do crew memebrs have BLS training,they should as this is now getting imperative in many places, is there any Defib on board?

Marvelous effort of a young medical student. This is how all medical students behave in their practical life after graduation and not like Industrial actions (strikes) for forcing their demands at the cost of lives of their patients.

All over the world CPR training is mandatory in school and colleges as well as airlines crew are certified for this very simple maneuver.It takes couple of hours demonstration and practice to teach this procedure. Even if interested one can learn on line.

I was in a similar unfortunate flight from Islamabad to Karachi, a young man 49 years old onboard on a Shaheen flight died. There were a couple of doctors on the flight and the guy had already passed away in the restroom, the doctors tried giving CPR but the gentleman was unresponsive. Reading this news brought photographic scenes of that flight, I am glad the student saved the life of the passenger.

Absolutely Wonderful!
Simple resuscitation could revive many patients. The technique is so simple (even mouth to mouth is no longer considered necessary) that it should be taught in every Pakistani school. A large number of cardiac arrest/other patients die in Pakistan every year without the basic treatment (particularly in rural area and during transit) and it makes one wonder how many lives could be saved by using this simple technique.

Should it not say Medical student saves life with the help of the PIA crew? instead of, PIA crew saves life. Regardless, PIA is in the news for something positive for a change. That is why it is important PIA and all other airlines require all crew members to be CPR certified, it will save lives, what if the young doctor wasn't on board?
