Pakistan team leaves for India to participate in World T20

KARACHI/LAHORE: After getting a green signal from the government, Pakistan cricket team on Friday night flew to India via United Arab Emirates to take part in the ICC World T20 tournament.
Pakistan is due to play their opening match against a first-round qualifier in Kolkata on March 16.
Earlier today, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan approved Pakistan’s participation in the tournament, following the security assurance given by the relevant quarters in India and the ICC.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan told reporters in Lahore that the players were given the pullout option if they felt any security threat but all 15 squad members wanted to play in the tournament.
“We want cricketing ties to remain active ... Our hope is that our cricketing relations [between India and Pakistan] remain intact,” Khan said.
Najam Sethi, chairman of the cricket board’s executive committee had revealed that the Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi Abdul Basit had met Rajnath Singh, Minister of Home Affairs of India, to discuss the matter and was satisfied with the security arrangements put in place.
“Subsequently, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has also approved Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup,” Sethi said.
“The team is completely ready and hopefully they will fly to Dubai tonight and then from there will leave straight for India,” he added.
The breakthrough came after the West Bengal state government issued a “public guarantee” of security to Shahid Afridi’s side for their match in Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, assured in writing ‘foolproof security’ to the Pakistan team for its match against India.
Cricket Association of Bengal, headquartered in Kolkata, capital city of West Bengal state, operates the Eden Gardens.
“Anybody coming to India will be provided security. There is no doubt about it,” Singh was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.
Yesterday, addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had reiterated the Government of Pakistan’s demand of providing its players a “public” guarantee.
“The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have been very accommodating, but it is the Indian government’s security assurance that matters the most,” Nisar had said.
The ICC has already moved Pakistan’s group match against hosts India to Kolkata on March 19 due to security concerns in Dharamsala.
The first round of the World T20 started on Tuesday. The top eight-ranked nations, including Pakistan, will join the competition from the “Super 10” stage which begins on March 15.

Though I am a strong Pakistani supporter I am afraid my opinion about the Pakistani Team is not very encouraging. Under the captaincy of Shahid Afridi the team has gone from bad to worse and the PCB and the Pakistani public seem to care less about this. Even the Management team is weak and is less concerned about the results. There is always the excuse that after a defeat the team has learnt its lessons and will do better in the next game but this never happens. I strongly recommend that the whole team structure, from the Management to the Captain be changed. This should also include the selectors as well. The first person to go should be the captain himself and the coach.

The public guarantee is only from the Chief Minister of West Bengal State. She can only provide guarantee for her state. So if Pakistan team only intends to play all their games in Calcutta, this assurance may work but not outside the state.

I am not seeing any such news from India that there is any "written" thing on this. In general, Home Ministry and CM of WB has assured to every team but India never gives such statements in writing to apease anyone. PCB if received any such thing, can they show to the public of Pakistan?
The reality is PCB made this demand but India did not respond in writing. Now PCB is in a fix whether go or not. They cannot avoid not going because they have to pay huge fine for not participating. So they informed local media that they received in writing. Else everyone in Pak will blast them.
Just imagine. Indian State Chief Minster writing letter to PCB.....unbelievable. Bad cover up by PCB. Anyway happy journey and good luck.

Mama Bannerjee cannot assure security all over india. What about the matches Pak will play in other states. Will they ask letters from each state they play in. The reality is that PCB dug a grave by asking for written assurance n the grave became deeper with involvement of Pak Gov. Now they are doing some face saving to send the team based on a letter provided by state government. If only PCB would have stopped after the match shifted to Kolkata all this mess could have been saved.

For all those people saying "everyone" will be provided with the same level of security and that there is no threat to Pakistan Cricket teams they should first talk to their HP CM and the people who are talking about not letting the Pakistan team play. Political or Physical there is a threat and more so when the CM of the host state is unwelcoming. Its a shame when the host doesn't want us and the Indians put the blame on Pakistan.
The threats are for specific and for Pakistan team only so the security guarantees also need to be specific and for Pakistan.

Having agreed to participate, and given security assurances at the highest level, we should go and take part in the tournament. India is not willing to play with Pakistan even in a third country. Numerous comments from our Indian 'friends' imply that Indian States are unable or unwilling to show to the world a unified, dignified and mature Indian national stand when it comes to a World event on its soil; or is it Pakistan specific only. Check Cricinfo then, this is what it says: "The Pakistan government has received two letters, from the West Bengal state government and Kolkata's police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, assuring special security measures for Pakistan's men's team while in Kolkata."

Public guarantee has been given by CM of west bengal so i assume its for one match she can only offer at her capacity which is to be played at eden garden. What about rest of the matches? What Mr. Rajnath singh assured is for all coming to India not specifically assuring Pakistan Team in writing as expected by PCB and PAK govt.

Welcome Pakistan cricket team and fans! These security threats have already prevented PAK players from participating in IPL. It is unfortunate that our political parties and their cronies are trying to score points over each other threatening to protest if Pak team plays India. Security has never been a problem. We don't have terrorists with AKs, but only politically motivated protestors who can be handled. And Pak has played in India before when the whole stadium and their team hotel would look like a impenetrable fortress. Moreover world cup is a make or break thing for the careers of many young cricketers. Welcome again.

Pakistan - well done for sticking your ground. Given that both countries have been at war three times already and threats even if it isolated to pitch being dug out, its still a threat from extremist groups which is singling out Pakistan and Sri Lanka...I think the ICC really needs to take a view about future hosting rights rather than treating the matter with kiddy gloves. It doesn't matter if the country is big or not a threat is a threat and can be carried out anywhere. Further, global events should not be mixed with local or national politics. If the same threat was made in any other country the authorities would go to town with security and not just leave it to local police. This only make s me think that Indian has along way to go to catch up with the west and may never do due to it culture.

I was 100% sure that in spite of so many hurdles India would not let the T-20 WC
go through without the participaton of Pakistan of Cricket Team. They made a smart move by changing the venue to Kolkata where they are in a position to generate 3 to 4 times more money than

An assurance given by a state Chief Minister or the Police Commissioner of a city is a lot different from the assurance given by the Central Government or the Union Home Minister in India. A state Chief Minister can give assurance only for the events held in that state and the city police chief for the events held in that city only. I don't know why Pakistan Government and PCB made such a fuss about this issue. Pakistan team will be as safe as every other team participating in the tournament and Pakistanis coming to watch the matches would be as safe as any other spectator coming the watch the matches, including Indians. Ahead of the tournament, the atmosphere need not have been vitiated to this extent. We welcome the Pakistani team and its supporters to India and do hope that they return to their country after an enjoyable visit to India. If this helps in improving the relationship between the people and governments of the two nations, it would be a huge bonus.

It was a good gesture on part of Mamta Banerjee (Chief minister of West. Bengal and who is also from opposition party - Congress(T) to provide written guarantee apart from the Union Home minister verbally assuring the Pakistan high commissioner in Delhi of the security to Pakistan team and the fans. The Indian government has also relaxed the Visa norms for Pakistani fans to visit India for the W.Cup. as reported in Times of India and TV channels this morning.
Let us put politics to rest now and Let the teams play good and entertaining cricket in WCup T20 and yes we Indians would like to welcome all Pakistani players and the fans to come and enjoy the Indian hospitality.

There was no need to send Security team to India. When their CM can't guarantee safety , only PCB should have informed ICC & Wt20 organizers & declined to play. Let them inform us how best they would guarantee safety. If PCB is satisfied, go ahead otherwise cancel.
Indian Govt. has not given any written guarantee , just a verbal from local officials.They have acted maturely without any drama.
PCB , CEO & Pak Govt have made themselves a laughing stock.
Afridi , Waqar & players will have a good reason for their utter failure in their very first match.

Pak decided not to go based on a state chief minister's statement, and then decided to go based on another state chief minister's letter.
And by the way, the knot Pak tied itself into, a written guarantee for safety. No one can guarantee safety of even the PM. There are no guarantees, only assurances of doing the best one can.

@Harmony-1© It is part of India but not India. There is difference between India and part of India. India can speak for all of India but a part of India (State government) has jurisdiction over the state only whereas Indian government has jurisdiction over all states. So the security is the responsibility of the state subject. Please get your facts straight prior to posting.

There was no threat in the first place. The Himachal Pradesh CM is a congress man and he was trying to portray as is there was a threat like the intolerance circus that happened six months ago. After achieving his objective he himself said he can arrange for the security.
The fact is except for Mumbai the Pakistani team can play anywhere in India.

@AK I have posted with my past experiences, Tell me one major tournament which Pakistan has won in past 10 yrs except edition of T20 world cup. Every time its the same old story.. The team has become bad to worst in last 10 yrs and PCB has failed to identify 3/4 good top order batsman in past 15 yrs after Anwar and Sohail retired.
