SAHIWAL: A murder convict escaped execution scheduled for Tuesday after the complainants forgave him for committing the crime, while two others were hanged at the Central Jail.

Jail Superintendent Gulzar Butt said three convicts -- Irfan Azam, Faiz and Ramzan -- were scheduled to be hanged as their mercy petitions had been rejected by the President and their death warrants were issued.

He said, however, Irfan Azam, had murdered his brother Junaid and sister Tehmina at Hota, Pakpattan, on June 4, 2003.

Additional Session Judge Abdul Hammed had sentenced him on Feb 19, 2004. He was forgiven by the complainants, who were his relatives.

Zahid Farid, Additional Judge, Pakpatan, confirmed a settlement was done among parties.

He said the remaining two convicts were hanged and their bodies were handed over to their families Ramzan, during a dacoity, had killed Sabiya Bibi and his two sons Amir Ahmed and Atir Ahmed in Gulsan Iqbal, Lahore, on September 5, 1992.

Similarly, Faiz had killed Barkat Ali on May 12, 1992, at Chak Chohak, Okara.

TOBA: A murder convict was hanged at Toba Tek Singh district jail on Tuesday.

A jail official said the convict, Mumtaz Ahmad of Bhakkar had developed relations with a married woman Sharifan Bibi.

Later, Mumtaz and Sharifan murdered the woman’s husband Noor Muhammad Khaira at Rajana village chak 264 GB, some 24 years back.

A district and sessions court had handed over death sentence to Mumtaz and life term to Sharifan Bibi.
