LAKKI MARWAT: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a project meant for the provision of necessary, modern facilities to the Government College of Management Sciences Lakki Marwat at the cost of over Rs70 million.

“The provision of facilities will help improve the quality of education at the College of Management Sciences and provide both teachers and students a comfortable environment,” JUI-F MPA Malik Noor Saleem Khan told Dawn on Tuesday.

The lawmaker said a stadium would be established in Darra Pezu town, while the relevant authorities would be asked to set up a girl’s degree college in PK-75 (Lakki Marwat-II) constituency.

“After matriculation, the girls from far-flung villages have to go to colleges in Lakki and Naurang for intermediate and graduation education as the entire PK-75 constituency has no college for them,” he said. Malik Noor said the establishment of the girl’s degree college would help ease the misery of girls.

AGITATION THREATENED: The peasant and youth councillors on Tuesday threatened to launch agitation against what they called lack of seriousness on part of the government to devolve powers and resources to the grassroots level.

Noted among them were Peasant Councillor Union president Usmanullah, Youth Councillor Union president Maulana Ikramullah, and councillors Gulfraz, Sajjad, Kifayatullah, Fareed Khan and Raza Khan.

The councillors told a meeting at the District Headquarters Complex Tajazai that if the local body members didn’t have powers, they won’t be able to resolve the people’s problems.

They asked the government to pay them the salary equivalent to the one drawn by BPS-12 officials.

The councillors also demanded proper offices, necessary staff and essential goods to discharge responsibilities efficiently.

Later, they met district naib nazim Haji Arab Khan in his office and informed him about his problems.

REPAIR OF ROAD DEMANDED: The people have demanded the early repair of the flood-hit portions of Begukhel Road in the district.

They told Dawn on Monday that the road linked dozens of villages and hamlets with Lakki city but several of its portions were washed away by flooding five months ago.

They said the poor condition of the road stressed out motorists and commuters besides causing damage to vehicles.

A villager said the people used the road to reach Lakki city from rural localities but since it was in bad shape, the people were vulnerable to accidents. “Many villagers take a detour to reach Lakki city for own safety,” he said.

Other people said floodwater had caused large potholes on the road.

“The damaged portions of the road are very close to the house of local MPA Munawar Khan but unfortunately, he has never bothered to ensure their repair,” a local resident said.

The people demanded that the government provide special funds to the district government for the early rehabilitation of the road.

GPO BURGLED: The general post office in Lakki city was burgled on Sunday night.

The burglars broke the locks of the treasury and took away over Rs1.265 million.

The police registered a case and began investigation.
