QUETTA: Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai has said that employment opportunities can be generated in the province by improving its agriculture sector and building cold storage facilities.

Talking to a delegation of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), led by its International Project Manager Marcel Stallen, here on Sunday, he said the underground water level in Balochistan was declining fast and the province had few reservoirs.

“Balochistan needs immediate financial support to build dams to preserve rainwater and raise the underground water level.”

He said dams would also help bring barren lands under cultivation.

The governor said that Quetta had also been facing a shortage of water.

He said the province was rich in natural resources and minerals but measures were required to improve its food production system.

He said international donors should cooperate in water, agriculture and irrigation projects.

The FAO delegation said the organisation would play its role in extending financial cooperation to Balochistan.
