LAHORE: Moneeza Hashmi, former programmes director at Pakistan Television, has been announced as one of the recipients of the President of NHK Prize by Japanese public broadcaster, NHK.

Moneeza has received numerous national and international awards, including the Pride of Performance in 2002, for her contribution to portrayal of women in television.

She will be presented with the award at a ceremony on Oct 22 at the NHK Broadcasting Centre in Shibuya, Tokyo, for her role in empowering women and helping raise awareness of critical issues such as gender, human and minority rights, and reproductive health and education, according to a press release.

Moneeza is currently president of the Public Media Alliance, a UK-based international media organisation, formerly known as Commonwealth Broadcasting Association. This is her third term as the president, the first female and only Pakistani to reach this position.

She was also appointed to the Benazir Bhutto Chair for Peace and Reconciliation through Education at Lahore College for Women University.
