LONDON: Manchester City bounced back from their shock Premier League loss to West Ham United at the weekend by scoring four goals in the first 36 minutes to beat Sunderland 4-1 in the League Cup third round on Tuesday.

Sergio Aguero fired home a ninth-minute penalty to give City the lead and Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0 in the 25th by finishing off a swift counter-attack.

Vito Mannone conceded an unfortunate own goal eight minutes later after Raheem Sterling’s effort struck the woodwork and rebounded into the net off the keeper’s back.

Sterling got on the scoresheet three minutes later, while Sunderland grabbed a second-half consolation goal through Ola Toivonen.

Leicester City needed extra time to beat West Ham 2-1, Peter Crouch’s cool first-half finish earned Stoke City a 1-0 win at Fulham, Aston Villa saw off Championship derby rivals Birmingham City 1-0 courtesy of an emphatic 62nd-minute header from Rudy Gestede and Everton came from behind to beat Reading 2-1.

Swansea City suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at Hull City, top flight Bournemouth came through a penalty shootout with Preston North End while Middlesbrough beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 in an all-Championship clash.—Agencies
