Police in India on Thursday arrested a prominent media personality on charges of murdering her daughter, according to reports in the Indian media.

Mumbai police announced that it had arrested Indrani Mukerjea, the CEO of a media company and wife of well-known TV executive Peter Mukerjea.

Initially, it was reported that the accused had murdered her sister, Sheena Bora, but police later revealed that Sheena was Indrani’s daughter.

“Indrani has confessed that Sheena was her daughter,” said Mumbai police chief, according to reports in Indian media.

Media reports have also claimed that Indrani Mukerjea had always introduced Sheena as her sister, and not her daughter in the elite social circles of Mumbai and Delhi.

A fresh arrest warrant for one of Mukerjea’s previous husbands was also issued on Wednesday.

Mukerjea and her lawyers are yet to make a statement and the case is scheduled to be heard in court soon.

The Mumbai police are yet to comment on why Mukerjea hid her daughter’s true relation to her.

The Telegraph published a report with details on Mukerjea’s past husbands and partners.

"Sheena and her brother, who works in an airline now, were brought up by their maternal grandparents in Guwahati. The children eventually moved to Mumbai and Sheena did her graduation from St Xavier's College there," added Indian media.

Sheena’s brother, and son of Mukerjea also confirmed that both Sheena and him are Indrani’s children.

"My sister was killed, I have no doubt about that, I had no clue Sheena was dead, whenever I checked, Indrani always claimed Sheena was abroad and busy with her studies," he said.

He further said that he knew why his sister was murdered, but would wait for his mother to confess, and if she does not then he will do whatever is necessary to expose the true motive.
