Pakistan's slide in international squash rankings continues

KARACHI: Pakistan's freefall in the international squash rankings continued with the game's former masters failing to register a spot in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) top 50 list released on Tuesday.

Pakistan, which ruled the world of squash for over four decades, currently finds in the lower rungs of the rankings with Nasir Iqbal placed at 51.

Danish Atlas Khan (66), his brother Aamir (69) and Farhan Zaman (75) are the other Pakistanis in the international rankings, though they make it on the list of top 100 players.

Egypt's Mohammed El Shorgaby remains the top player in the world rankings dominated by his countrymen. There are currently 14 players from Egypt in the top 50 list.

The state of our sports represents the state of governance of the country. Unfortunately, PSF has failed miserably due to lack of funding and nepotism. Its sad to see Jahangir and Jansher sharing 18 World/british open titles between them and no body to carry the torch today. I hope armed forces take interest in reviving the sport as nothing can be expected from the civil administration.

The down fall in sports is in direct corelation to the spread of extremism in our country.

We were only great in Squash because of one family! It makes no sense to over analyze the situation. It actually made no sense for us to be good in Squash given the sport is not much for poor people to master. It was one family. We enjoyed the glory till it lasted. It was a great time. At many times, we took it for granted. But, that is what it is. We should focus on cheaper and more lucrative team sports like football than to try to figure out how to make champions in Squash. Again, it was an anomaly when it happened.

There was a time when any one of the Pakistani players could beat all the present top 5 international players, one after the others, with ease. Ah' 'when we were Kings'!

Sports performance is direct reflection of economic health of a country and its overall well being. Sports is one field which can survive anything but lack of talent and merit. Unfortunately Pakistan is one country which tops the list of countries in nepotism and disregard for merit, hence free fall in squash is nothing unusual
