PESHAWAR: A head constable was killed and two others — including a policeman — were injured when unknown men opened on them at Peshawar's Judicial Complex.

According to Sub-Inspector Muhammad Akbar, Head Constable Hashmat came to Judicial Complex to attend a hearing on a personal matter when he came under fire. Subsequently, he was killed and two others, including a policeman, sustained injuries.

The assailants escaped after launching the attack.

The casualties were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital.

Hashmat was the head constable at Peshawar's Kotwali police station.

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, lies on the edge of Pakistan's tribal areas which have been labelled by Washington as the main sanctuary for Al Qaeda and Taliban militants in the country.

The city has seen frequent attacks by militants in the past few years, with targets ranging from civilians to policemen and other law enforcement personnel

Two security men killed in Kurram checkpost attack

Two security personnel were killed Thursday when suspected militants attacked Warmagai security checkpost in Central Kurram Agency, security sources told DawnNews.

Two security men also received bullet injuries during the attack.

Sources said that security personnel responded with retaliatory firing as a result of which the militants fled, leaving their weapons behind.

Kurram is one of the most sensitive tribal areas as it borders three Afghan provinces and at one point was one of the key routes for militant movement across the border.

The region was claimed by the military to have been cleared of insurgents during an operation a couple of years ago, however, militants still carry out sectarian attacks and also target security forces occasionally.

Kurram tribal agency is adjacent to North Waziristan region where the operation Zarb-i-Azb is in progress against Taliban and other insurgent groups.
