KARACHI: A suspect allegedly involved in over two dozen sectarian killings was arrested in New Karachi, police said on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Bilal alias Chingari, was arrested by the Bilal Colony police, said Gulberg SP Faisal Noor.

Speaking at a press conference at his office, the officer said the suspect had allegedly killed 26 people including doctors belonging to the Shia community on sectarian grounds. Some of his accomplices have been killed in ‘encounters’, while others have already been arrested. The suspect belonged to a ‘religious party’, said the officer.

Rangers attack

The Gulberg SP said the police also detained another suspect for his alleged involvement in a suicide bomb attack on the Rangers near Qalandria Chowk last Friday.

Two Rangers personnel were killed, while four others were wounded in the blast.

The officer said the suspect, identified as Syed Talha Hussain, was arrested on the basis of ‘some evidence’ collected from the blast site and information provided by an intelligence agency.

However, identity of the bomber had not yet been ascertained, the SP said, adding that investigation into the attack was at an initial stage.
