RAWALPINDI: A former councillor of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen in the limits of Ratta Amral police station on Friday, police said.

The killing of the former councillor sparked panic among the residents of the locality who staged a protest against the police for their failure to arrest the culprits and maintaining law and order in the city.

Angry protesters, numbering around 200, raised slogans against the local police and blocked Milad Nagar Chowk for about two hours. They dispersed only after they were assured by senior police officials that the culprits would be traced soon.

Raja Kamran, 35, former councillor UC-3, who also owned a chemist shop in Ratta area, was unlocking the store when he was shot by two motorcycle riders. He was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital in serious condition but could not survive.

Station House Officer, Ratta Amral police station, Altaf Gohar said it was too early to give a reason for the killing.

When asked whether the victim had received extortion or terror threats from any group he said: “No, there were no such complaints from the victim or his family. The motive behind the murder would only be known once investigations are started.”
