SBP independence

Published January 31, 2015

APROPOS Dawn’s editorial ‘Confusion at SBP’, Ishaq Dar needs to be thanked for clearing the confusion regarding the independence of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

In their negotiations with Pakistan, IMF has been assiduously insisting that the SBP must be made completely independent. Mr Dar has been persistently telling the IMF that it was a work in progress. Now nothing is left to guessing estimates. However, the only question that needs to be answered is about the extent to which the finance ministry plays a role in determining the discount rate.

Both Mr Dar and the governor of SBP must answer the question independently for a change.
