GUJRAT: The Government Maternity Hospital Tanda has finally become functional eight years after the construction of its building.

The project was delayed as the district government had been trying to get approval of the posts of doctors and paramedics since long.

The PML-Q government had sanctioned machinery as well as the beds in the hospital some eight years ago but the posts for the hospital were not approved due to which it took many years to make it functional.

An official of the district government told Dawn that even the building department had not formally handed over the building’s possession to the district health department for the execution of the scheme. The condition of building had deteriorated during the last eight years whereas the barn new machinery was getting rusty, he said.

District Coordination Officer Liaqat Ali Chattha told Dawn that after getting the damaged portions of the building repaired, its possession had been handed over to the health department some months back.

He said the hospital comprised of 20 beds as with the appointment of four doctors besides other staff, adding that it was made functional on Wednesday.
