ISLAMABAD: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will recertify its beneficiaries to remove flaws in the distribution of financial assistance.

The move also aims to update the list of people enrolled with it by 2010, said the BISP spokesman.

BISP Chairman Enver Baig speaking at a `Pakistan on Social Safety Net Project’ conference on Thursday said the organisation planned reassessment of its beneficiaries.

He said the BISP would recertify its beneficiaries, update the national socio-economic registry, expand the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme through enhanced collaboration with provinces, relook at the graduation model and improve its outreach to beneficiaries.

He said the BISP also planned to extend its strategic partnership with different development partners, including the World Bank and Department for International Development.

The BISP spokesman said there were complaints of irregularities and favouritism in preparation of the list of 4.6 million beneficiaries. Working papers were being prepared for the recertification process.

The social safety net is also working on expanding the CCT programme. Some 52 families in five districts are being provided financial assistance to send their children to schools under this programme. The BISP plans to expand the programme by enrolling 2m children in 32 districts, he said.
