LAHORE, July 1: The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid on Monday submitted a privilege motion against rise in ‘police encounters’ in Punjab.

PML-Q MPA Amer Sultan Cheema in the motion termed deaths in these police encounters extra-judicial killings, saying such actions were not acceptable. He also mentioned the involvement of police in the kidnapping of a Sargodha trader and his subsequent killing.

Sardar Asif Nakai and Dr M Afzal filed a privilege motion against the police failure to implement e-FIRs, saying huge funds were ‘wasted’ on the programme which was introduced in 2006. They said ignorance of the official concerned about the matter was deplorable.

PML-Q MPA Samina Khawar Hayat also submitted a motion drawing the house’s attention towards the kidnapping of an accountant of a factory owned by a nephew of former Punjab Assembly opposition leader Raja Riaz.

Tax on accounts: The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid has questioned Finance Minister Ishaq Dar’s wisdom of charging 0.5 per cent tax on the accountholders having Rs10 million and above amount.

“The foreign currency account holders’ confidence has not yet been restored because of Dar’s decision in 1990s to freeze the foreign currency accounts,” PML-Q Senator Kamil Ali Agha said in a statement here on Monday.

He said whenever the PML-N government came to power Mr Dar targeted the accountholders.

He said the PML-N government’s decision would also have an adverse impact on pensioners and senior citizens’ life savings. “The secret taxation is an insult to the people’s mandate,” Agha said.
