ISLAMABAD: Newly-elected prime minister Nawaz Sharif was administered the oath of office by President Asif Zardari on Wednesday, hours after the PML-N chief was voted to lead the National Assembly and form the government at the centre.
A crowd of government officials, military officers, and diplomatic representatives was present at the ceremony at the Presidency.
Following the oath-taking, the caretaker government at the centre stood dissolved.
Sharif was elected the country’s 18th prime minister in a race which also featured Pakistan Peoples Party’s Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf’s Javed Hashmi.
Sharif won the office by bagging 244 votes with his rivals Fahim and Hashmi securing 42 and 31 votes respectively.
Sharif returned to power after surviving a military coup, a seven-year exile to Saudi Arabia and a government dismissal. His party secured majority in the May 11 elections making him the only leader to assume power for the third time amid hopes and promises that he will steer the country out of crisis.
After being elected to the office of prime minister, Sharif addressed the National Assembly and vowed to fulfill the mandate entrusted upon him by the people of Pakistan.
In his address on the floor of the House, Sharif said time had begun for politics of principles and not of power. He added that the PML-N had embraced the process of change by leaving the field open for Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sharif said the process was also observed in Balochistan where PML-N vacated the field for the representatives of the people of the province.
The prime minister moreover said his government’s priority would be to give the country a solid infrastructure, bring in economic reforms and tackle corruption.

How can a political party shut down businesses and schools,and the whole city.Who has given them right to call a strike.This country needs to wake up,and get the economy moving.Pakistan is a victim of its own political party,whose leader is calling shots sitting thousand of miles away.

Isn't he the same man who had two chances in the past? What makes us think he will bring Pakistan to "her rightful place among the top nations of the world"? I hope he doesn't rule, but lead Pakistan and change his governing style from the past, so that Pakistan can truly prosper.
Let us not put all our hopes in one man - particularly the one who has had an opportunity in the past. I hope he surrounds himself with the right kind of people and brings in changes, that will benefit Pakistan and not just himself and his supporters. Also, i hope he doesn't devote all his attention to settle previous scores, against individuals who have supposedly harmed him.

Congratulations to the people of Pakistan, PM Nawaz Sharif, President Zardari, and General Kayani for holding general elections in Pakistan. I admire President Zaradri for holding fair elections (where his party lost) and I admire General Kayani for breaking the Army traditions and not taking over, in the name of saving the country. I don't think that Sharif's Government will makes any difference to Pakistan especially to the poor people of Pakistan. Like somebody said another five years down the drain.i think its shame and when the people of Pakistan will learn to vote these corrupted people out of office for good.

It's a good thing PML won the elections. PTI's victory and their inability to deliver at the centre would have been a big blow to everyone's hopes. Now every party has its little corner in the country to show their policies. I am really hopeful for Pakistan this time around.

Great day for Pakistan on this democratic transition. People who braved the militant threats in some areas, some even sacrificing their lives, have demonstrated that this time Pakistanis were determined to take democracy a step further at any cost. Some enthusiastic voters who wanted to see Imran Khan as their new leader would have been disappointed at the results, but they should consider themselves victorious as they fully participated in the democratic process. The new PM's job is perhaps the most challenging than that of any other leader in the region in the last few decades. We all should wish him all the best and pray for peace and growth!

Congratulations to new PM! I hope this will not be again the same next 5 year rule with empty promises. I wish the new Government a success. If they are able to fulfil 25% of the promises they offered to Nation in their compaign, they will surely be elected again in the next election as well - but whether they would be interested to achive this goal is a big (?).
