ISLAMABAD, Sept 30: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Sunday chaired a
high-level meeting to review the situation arising out of the September 29
police violence and the strategy for the re-election of Gen Musharraf.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Aziz claimed that the acceptance of nomination
papers of President Pervez Musharraf by the Election Commission showed the
supremacy of law and constitution in the country.
PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Speaker of National Assembly Chaudhry
Amir Hussain, Minister for Foreign Affairs Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, Senior
Adviser to the Prime Minister Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada, Minister for Information
and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Durrani and Secretary-General of PML Mushahid
Hussain attended the meeting.
Referring to the clashes between police and lawyers on the Constitution Avenue,
Mr Aziz said that all segments of the society must respect the law, particularly
those who were practising law. He claimed that the electoral process, starting
with the presidential election and to be followed by the general elections,
would put the country on the sustainable path of democracy.
Considering the expected resignations by a large number of APDM legislators, he
stressed that all parties should fully participate in the election process and
reflect their views.
The meeting also discussed the Supreme Court sou moto notice about the police
violence against lawyers, journalists and members of civil society on Saturday.
The prime minister said that the government would ensure that the life and
property of all its citizens was protected at all costs.He said peace and
harmony must be maintained and the government will not allow any one to violate
the law of the land.
The participants said the PML and coalition parties had a comfortable majority
in the electoral college for the presidential election and President Pervez
Musharraf will be victorious in the October 6 presidential election.
The meeting also discussed the overall political situation in the country, with
particular reference to the presidential and upcoming general elections in the
country.
