S. Waziristan peace task for Aurakzai

By Qudssia Akhlaque

ISLAMABAD, Oct 3: After getting the green light from President Pervez Musharraf, NWFP governor Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai is now working on a peace accord with tribal elders in the volatile South Waziristan Agency on the same lines as the one inked in North Waziristan last month, knowledgable sources told Dawn on Tuesday.

“The NWFP governor is already at it and it is now work in progress,” sources said without going into the specifics.

When asked about the possible timeline, a senior military official said it was difficult to predict that as it was a complex matter involving various factors. However, he added: “The effort is to do it as soon as possible.”

Talking to Pakistani journalists in New York last week President Musharraf disclosed that after receiving certain signals from the tribal area he had directed the NWFP governor to replicate the peace treaty in South Waziristan.

The NWFP governor gave a briefing to the US secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the North Waziristan peace treaty at the White House on Sept 22 while President Musharraf was engaged in a one-to-one meeting with President Bush, it is learnt.
