KARACHI, Oct 11: A large number of people, particularly those living in Karachi’s southern parts, came out of their apartments and homes when a mild quake (4 on Richter Scale) hit the area after Tuesday midnight at 12.28am.
The tremors frightened people in the Defence Housing Authority, Clifton and Seaview areas into leaving their homes. Responding to Dawn queries, the Islamabad-based director general of the Met Office, Dr Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, said that Karachi had experienced a quake of mild intensity.
Nasir Mehmood of the Met Office in Peshawar, which is one of the centres where earthquake sensors are installed, said that the intensity of the Karachi quake was 4 on the Richter scale.
He said that another earthquake had hit Balochistan at 8.12pm on Tuesday. The areas affected included Khuzdar and Saraib and its intensity was recorded at 5 on the Richter scale, terming it moderate.
Similarly, the northern areas of the country that had been hit by the devastating quake on Saturday continued to feel aftershocks and between 70 and 80 tremors of the intensity ranging between 4 and 5. Another earthquake hit the Indonesia island of Sumatra in the Far East at 8 pm on Tuesday. Its intensity was recorded at 6 on the scale.
