Riaz urges ECP to bar Sharifs from contesting polls

LAHORE: Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz said on Saturday the Election Commission should immediately declare the Sharif brothers ineligible to contest polls in light of the Supreme Courts recent orders.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference here in Lahore, the PPP’s Party leader said that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was already constitutionally ineligible for elections following an SC ruling declaring the 1990 election, which was won by Sharif’s party, was rigged.

In its landmark ruling on Friday, the apex court ordered legal proceedings against a former intelligence chief and former army chief over allegations of bankrolling politicians to stop the current ruling Pakistan People’s Party from winning 1990 election.  The SC also ordered a probe of the politicians allegedly involved in the corruption and malpractice.

Sharif is one of the politicians accused of receiving funds during the 1990 election which were eventually won by the PML-N.

Riaz said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) should ensure that it recovers all the public funds doled out to corrupt politicians in the rigged elections, as per the courts orders.

The PPP leader urged the Election Commission to disqualify the Punjab CM so he may not be able to influence the investigation. Riaz added that the Sharif brothers should apologise to the nation for committing the crime.
