Endangered ties

THE tragic incident of the Nato attack on Pakistani check posts and the killing of troops has hurt the entire nation. The government has also condemned the attack in strong words and has registered its protest with the United States by summoning its ambassador to the Foreign Office in Islamabad. Though the government has suspended supplies to the Nato forces in Afghanistan, the Pakistani public is not satisfied with just a protest or halting the supplies as Nato has killed our troops without reason. The attack cannot be described as an accident; it seems to have been a pre-planned operation reflecting US intentions and hatred for Pakistan’s sovereignty. In response to Pakistan’s protest, the US has just voiced regrets and said that an inquiry will be held. It is not a minor issue to be forgotten; it is a direct threat to the solidarity, integrity and sovereignty of our country.

The nation cannot tolerate Nato’s attack as Pakistan has been an ally of the US-led alliance and has suffered heavy losses in terms of lives and property in the war on terror. All political and religious parties as well as other groups have expressed their concern over the attack…. The elders of various tribal regions have also condemned the attack…. The people are asking the government what it had achieved during the past 10 years as a US ally in the war on terror except for heavy casualties and domestic crises.

In every meeting, the US authorities have appreciated Pakistani efforts against terrorism and assured full support for strengthening bilateral ties and financial help. The attack is tantamount to … a negation of its support. This irresponsible act on the part of Nato may cause a setback to the US in the war on terror. It has also damaged the fragile relationship of the two neighbouring countries — Pakistan and Afghanistan. …The US has always mentioned Pakistan’s sacrifices by describing the country as a most sincere friend but the recent attack has washed away all previous efforts…In the prevailing situation, Pakistan cannot remain in the US-led alliance…. — (Nov 29)
