ISLAMABAD, June 18: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on Tuesday recognized three medical and dental colleges of the NWFP.

The PMDC has recognized four other colleges provisionally, and unrecognized three others.

Khyber Medical College and Khyber College of Dentistry, Peshawar, have been recognized by the PMDC.

The PMDC is a regulatory body responsible for maintenance of medical and dental education standard on a par with international standards.

Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad, is the third one recognized in the NWFP, whereas dental section of Ayub Medical College has been provisionally recognized.

Gomal Medical College, D.I. Khan, and Saidu Medical College, Swat, are under scrutiny and have not been recognized but allowed to continue educational activities with instructions to remove teaching staff deficiency and fulfil other requirements essential for a standard medical college.

In the private sector, Frontier Medical College, Abbottabad, Kabir Medical College/GIMS, Peshawar, and Sardar Begum Dental College, Peshawar, have been provisionally recognized and their recognitions suspended for six months till the removal of deficiencies pointed out by the inspection teams. The same body put Women Medical College, Abbottabad, under scrutiny and has not recognized it but allowed it to continue educational activities.—APP
