KARACHI: Rainwater submerges many roads

KARACHI, March 12: Rain water and overflowing sewage was standing on many roads in the city on Monday. The old city areas were the worst affected. Water had accumulated in Empress Market, Mir Karam Ali Talpur Road, Dr Daudpota Road, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Liaquat, Murad Khan Road, in front of City Courts, Shaheed Haji Abdur Razaq Tasty Road, Salih Mohammad street (Bolton Market), Laxmidas street, Kharadar Mauliji street,Jilani Centre near Tower, and in different streets of Light House, Aram Bagh, Manghopir Road near Valika Chowk, Banaras Chowk, Ittehad Town, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road and Bismillah Chowk of Baldia Town.

In some parts of Sadar, the sanitary staff remained busy throughout the day draining the water. The roads and streets around Tower are yet to receive attention officials’ attention. Saddar seemed the worst-hit area. The road in front of the Saddar Fire Brigade and Rainbow Centre was submerged. Ankle-deep water was standing in the market areas in front of Empress Market, opposite Jahangir Park. The low-lying area of Urdu Bazaar and some streets off Burnes Road were filled with stagnant water. The newly constructed New M. A. Jinnah Road was, however, not affected by the rain due to its proper sewerage system.

Complaints about water accumulation on roads were also received from Streets 14, 16 and 17, East Street of Defence Phase-I, Zamzama and Neelum Colony.

The residents of Lyari Town complained of poor sewerage and added that water had accumulated on Fida Hussain Shaika Road, Ahmad Shah Bukhari Road, Karabhai Karinji Road and Slaughter House Road.

The main University Road from the Civic Center to the New Town police station was submerged. After hectic efforts the sanitary staff cleared water by late afternoon from this busy road from Civic Centre to Askari Park.
