Hafiz Hussain announces resignation

ISLAMABAD, Nov 16: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Hafiz Hussain Ahmed has announced his resignation from the lower house of parliament.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, Mr Ahmed said that in a recent meeting of its supreme council, the MMA had decided that its legislators would resign if the bill was approved without addressing their concerns and without incorporating the recommendations of the ulema panel.

I, therefore, submitted my resignation to MMA president Qazi Hussain Ahmed and secretary-general Maulana Fazlur Rahman for submitting it to the speaker; and if they fail to do so, I will do it myself, he told newsmen.

He said although the bill passed by the National Assembly was not exactly the one that had been approved by the select committee, it did not contain changes proposed by the ulema.

He said he would not be attending the NA session. He said that parliament was the custodian of the constitution and its members were duty-bound to ensure that no law repugnant to the Quran and Sunnah was framed.
